Chapter Ten

The short drive felt like an eternity. With the idea of being able to stay, Emily was afraid she would pull back. She would do something half-heartedly. She would hesitate at a crucial moment. She knew she had to commit to something. Above all, she promised herself that she would do everything in her power to save her sister. Whatever else happened, whatever other plans she might concoct, it had to be with the primary intention of saving her sister.

Emily’s train of thought ended as she arrived at Will’s and was helped out of the carriage by one of Will’s house staff. She recognized him. She paused when her feet were on the ground, about to ask the footman’s name. She decided against it, realizing it would be a major red flag if her sister already knew him. She would ask Will later.

When she stepped inside the entryway, the room was decorated with glass—even more so than before. An assortment of crystals, suspended in mid-air, refracted firelight around the room. Her eyes, drawn up by the crystal snow, came to find the ceiling was dark as night—as if there was no ceiling at all. The darkness felt cold and endless.

She didn’t realize how long she had been staring until she felt someone come up behind her and kiss her cheek, “It’s me.” Emily closed her eyes and smiled. His hands were on her arms and, although they were cold to the touch, her core seemed to radiate heat that spread through her entire body. She turned to find him looking up. “An artist will be in tomorrow so we can have an indoor starscape for the ball,” he noted, “it does look quite empty up there.” He turned his attention back to Emily, “What do you need?”

Emily suddenly felt like she needed to know if Will truly loved her sister. She pushed it from her mind because that didn’t matter right then. They were close friends. They were engaged. That is all she needed to know about their relationship. “We should start with privacy,” Emily gestured toward the library. Will held his arm in that direction to allow Emily to go first. When Will shut the door behind them, Emily suddenly remembered why she had come and nearly exploded, “You could have told me my sister was in another relationship!”

Will’s eyes became wide and his hands lightly covered his mouth. After a few moments, he finally brought his hands down to speak, “She had left Capital to be with her family. She was upset when your sister told her of her intention to marry. I thought she would be gone longer, at least long enough to resolve all of this before she returned.”

“She came back because she knew my sister was sick,” Emily racked her brain, trying to remember how she had known. She snapped a few times as it was coming to her, then exclaimed, “Wit! Wit told her the princess was sick. She came back to take care of her or something.
